Costa Rica, the Vatican and 11 countries might be mediators in Venezuelan crisis

Peruvian Foreign Minister Ricardo Luna proposed that Costa Rica, the Vatican and 11 other countries in the region be mediators in the crisis affecting Venezuela, in a context marked by President Nicolás Maduro’s desperation to militarize the country.

I suggest that the Vatican mediate with the 12 OAS countries that follow the crisis in Venezuela,”

told the minister to the press.

The head of Peruvian diplomacy did not list the 12 countries but ruled out a new single management of the Vatican because

the one created through the Union of South American Nations was no good.”

Luna emphasized that the countries of the region concerned about the internal situation of Venezuela must be active within and outside the OAS framework, and recalled that, so far,

the OAS is always the sum of the wills of its members.”

According to Luna, in Venezuela there is a provocation from Maduro to militarize civil society.

Maduro is on the verge of despair. The situation has gone out of hand (…). No one doubts that this gentleman is out of his mind. Maduro does not seek dialogue. On the contrary, he is militarizing the conflict by creating ghosts and using violence,”

said Foreign Minister Luna.

The criticism comes when at least 20 people died in three weeks of violent protests against the government, demanding general elections.

Throughout this week Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay have jointly pronounced on the protests in Venezuela.
