Costa Rica will consult IDH Court for rights of sexual diverse people

The struggle for the rights of sexual diverse people in Costa Rica will have a new chapter, this time at the Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (IDH Court).

The government announced on Tuesday that it will go the international tribunal to determine if the American Convention of Human Rights (CADH) protects the right for name-changing corresponding to gender identity.

Currently, the only way to obtain a name-change is through a judicial process. Therefore, the government wants to know if the IDH Court would require a new administrative procedure that could be free and faster.

Recently the UN called for respect of judicial independence after the Supreme Court opened a disciplinary process against the judge Carlos Sánchez who recognized a civil union of two young males.
