A 12-year-old girl is making Costa Ricans proud, since she is one of the 120 nominees for the International Children’s Peace Prize 2016. It is annually awarded by Kids’ Rights Organization.

Sofía Escalante received the news along with her family on Tuesday afternoon. She postulated in February, 2016 to be chosen. Now she is looking foward to being the winner.

According to the Kids’ Rights official website, she started a campaign called “Gracias por sonreir conmigo Sofi.” Sofía designed bracelets and sold them at 10 dollars each. It was a success and the money she collected was used to donate 9 vital signs monitors to the National Children’s Hospital.

Sofía was impressed for the news. She had even forgotten having sent the application form.

It is very difficult to win, but just the fact of being nominated is a huge honor, not only for me or my family, but for the entire country,

declared Sofía.

Her mother, Angélica Gutiérrez, said that it is something worthy of merit because nominees are children who have gone through difficult times and they have been able to move on by helping other children.
