Costa Rican sisters condemned for money laundering in Guatemala were extradited

Two Costa Rican sisters who sentenced in Guatemala for money laundering were extradited on Tuesday to comply with their conviction in the country, reported the prison system.

The sisters were dispatched on a plane to Costa Rica from the La Aurora International Airport in the Guatemalan capital in a simultaneous extradition process, said SP spokesman Rudy Esquivel.

The women were identified as Mendez, aged 33 and 37, who were kept in prison in Cobán, in the north of the country.

Esquivel said that the 33-year-old woman had been held in that prison since April 3rd, 2016, while her older sister was jailed on May 18th.

Both women were convicted for the crime of money laundering.

The spokesman commented that the extradition is in compliance with international treaties to serve private sentences in their country of origin.
