Most Costa Ricans have little or no preparation to face a natural disaster, according to a recent study revealed by the National University of Costa Rica (UNA).
For example, 64.8% of people claim they are not prepared to face an emergency as part of a community.
Both individually and collectively, people surveyed feel that they can suffer negative effects from earthquakes, hurricanes and volcanic activity, but despite being exposed, they are mostly unprepared,”
the study indicates.
Another concern is that 83.3% of the respondents do not know the country’s emergency structure.
Despite this, trust in institutions is very high. 76.5% of Ticos rely on the work of the National Emergency Commission (CNE), 83% in the Fire Department and 85.6% in the Costa Rican Red Cross.
The study concluded that there is a great need to inform and train the population in the face of possible disasters.
To reach these results, the researchers called 600 people via telephone from April 17th to 27th this year.
