American Expatriate Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s profit from the U.K.

In the past 10 years, Costa Rican exports to the United Kingdom have always resulted in profits.

The European country is not just any trade partner: in 2015 it ranked eleventh among the main export destinations of Costa Rica, which sold $ 311.8 million and received $ 45.7 million of profits.

Ninety percent of the exports were fruits, vegetables and food preparations. On the other hand, Costa Rica imports vehicles (44%), drugs (11%), and whiskey (5%) from the U.K.

In tourism, the number of visitors is also good. According to figures from ICT, last year 47,500 British citizens visited the country, 20% more than in 2014. In addition, this amount accounted for 12% of all international arrivals from Europe.

In addition, the announcement of U.K.’s departure from the Eurpean Union, forces the country to work on a strategy to maintain all current trading conditions. For example, the country should offer similar conditions to those it already has under the Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union (EU-CAAA).

This is also an opportunity for Costa Rica to sell goods and services at a more expensive price to the U.K.
