Country had a negative variation of consumer prices in August

In August, Costa Rica had a negative variation in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of -0.22%, for an inflation of 0.91 accumulated in the last 12 months of statistics.

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC), August’s variation was due to price reductions in the food and non-alcoholic beverage groups (-1.11%), entertainment and culture (-0.20%) and clothing and footwear (-0.18%).

Groups of alcoholic beverages and cigarettes (0.57%), meals outside the home and lodging services (0.26%), education (0.17%) and health (0.14%) rose.

The accumulated inflation in the first eight months of the year reached 1.11%, according to the INEC.

Inflation in 2016 was 0.77% and the Central Bank projected a 3% change in the CPI for this year, although year-on-year inflation of 0.91% remained below the target.
