Defects in Panamanian equipment caused blackout in Costa Rica

The blackout that left the country with no power supply on Saturday afternoon was caused by defects in Panamanian transmission systems, according to the country’s media.

Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, several sectors of El Salvador and also Nicaragua had a blackout on Saturday, because the electrical system is interconnected in the region. Costa Rica was affected by the fault for about four hours.

According Panamanian authorities, some of the transmission lines are in maintenance and one of them failed, so the rest overloaded, causing the fault in the region.
