Doctors targeted by authorities for sharp increase in rates

The Superintendencia General de Seguros (SUGESE) and the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Commerce (MEIC) demanded accountability from Colegio de Médicos y Cirujanos, so that they explained the method used to set the increase in medical professional fees in force since May, 2nd.

Tomás Solye, insurance superintendent, requested studies that justify the rate adjustment, and an explanation of the magnitude of the impact of the changes to the minimum rates before May, 2nd.

In a letter addressed to Colegio de Médicos, he explained that such adjustment might affect the costs and stability of accident insurances, health insurances, compulsory occupational risk insurances, compulsory automotive insurances and civil liability insurances, among others.

The new medical rates will hit your pocket even if you have an insurance company. Why? The insurance premiums paid by policyholders would be lower than those required to fully cover the medical procedure under the new conditions, which results in the need for consumers to provide additional money to cover the expense.

Yesterday, however, Colegio de Médicos temporally suspended the new rates for a month.
