Drug trafficking in Costa Rica is prevailing on public spaces. On more than one occasion, traffickers have used public highways to land their drug-laden airplanes.
It seems incredible but it is real.
This was confirmed by Minister of Public Security Gustavo Mata, who referred to the use of air space by criminal groups after the arrest of a Costa Rican group linked to the Sinaloa Cartel.
Traffickers are using more than just landing strips. They are taking advantage of places that can be used to land planes (…) we have heard that they have landed on public roads from Guanacaste, in very straight roads that do not have trees and that allow them to land at night,
stated Mata.
On November 8th and Novemver 9th, the police arrested a group of 24 individuals that were closely related to the Sinaloa Cartel.
According to the investigation, they were moving cocaine and marijuana for the Mexican, drug ring.
