Dry Law in 7 municipalities

The National Union of Local Governments (UNGL) conducted a survey of those municipalities that will enforce the Dry Law on September 15th and Tibás, Moravia, Goicoechea, Alajuelita, Heredia, Alajuela and Esparza will prohibit the sale of liquor, in order to promote harmony in patriotic parades.

In addition, 32 municipalities reported that they will not enforce the Prohibition, while the others have not made a decision yet. However, if local governments do not reach an agreement, the prohibition of liquor sales in the cantons will not apply or they will do as the municipal law establishes.

According to article 26 from the Electoral Code and the Law on Regulation and Marketing of alcoholic beverages, each municipality has the power to “… regulate the marketing of alcoholic beverages and the consumption of liquor during civic events, parades or other cantonal activities in the established route and it may define the range.”

Those municipalities in which the Dry Law will be enforced are:

-Heredia: from 5 am to 3 pm.
-Alajuelita: from 12 am to 3 pm (districts where there are parades).
-Tibás; from 8 am to 3 am.
-Moravia: from 6 am to 12 noon.
-Goicochea: from 7:30 am to 3 pm. It will only apply from Walmart in Guadalupe to the north side of the Church of Guadalupe and from Los Cafetos urbanization to Delta Service Station in Alto de Guadalupe.
-Esparza: from 7 am to 2 pm.
-Alajuela: from 8 am to 4 pm.
