Due to infrastructure works in Virilla bridge, transit from Alajuela to San José will be closed

On November 4th roof trusses from one of the new lanes in Virilla bridge on General Cañas road will be moved, forcing the closure of the transit from Alajuela to San José.

The closure will take place from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm for heavy-articulated trucks., from the junction of EPA, in Belén, while light vehicles and buses will continue to leave through Conservatorio Castella, as informed Hugo Zúñiga, official at the Roads National Council.

In the first case, heavy trucks will go through the Real Cariari, Cenada, Barreal, until Lagunilla and then to La Valencia to retake the road on Juan Pablo II bridge. In the case of light vehicles, they will go through Lagunilla and then to La Valencia to end up in Juan Pablo II bridge.

Since the closure is diurnal, authorities asked drivers to respect these times: they should avoid going through the area or do it before or after the closure.

Route 27, San José-Caldera, is also a travel option from Alajuela and West. The process of strengthening and expanding 4 to 6 lanes started on November 1st. This work involves an investment of 7,400 million colones.

Once the structural and seismic reinforcement is completed, the bridge will function for 75 additional years. Furthermore, the expansion will allow more fluidity to heavy vehicular traffic.
