Ecological Blue Flag opens category for “Sustainable Construction”

The Blue Flag Ecological Program (PBAE) created a new category called “Sustainable Construction”, which aims to motivate and recognize architectural, engineering and construction projects that reduce the effects of climate change.

In addition, those who contribute to the Sustainable Development Objectives (ODS) promulgated by the UN, which Costa Rica has assumed as part of the 2030 agenda commitments,”

said the statement sent by the Federated Association of Engineers and Architects (CFIA).

This category will become the number 15 and was structured under a cycle of continuous improvement (planning, doing, checking and acting), where the environmental aspects to be evaluated should pursue the reduction of negative impacts to the environment.

Three modalities of participation were established:

Sustainable design: For projects (not including the construction phase) aiming to be recognized with the Blue Flag Ecological Sustainable Design award for the application of good practices, associated in the conception and planning of the project.

Sustainable construction: Consideration will be given to works whose construction phase is aligned with practices that have minimal impacts on the environment.

Design and sustainable construction: For projects that are submitted from the beginning in the two previous modalities.

This initiative was materialized by the impulse of the CFIA, Aqueducts and Sewers (AyA) and the support of the institutions that make up the PBAE.
