American Expatriate Costa Rica

Ecuadorian castaways stranded in Coco Island for a month

Three Ecuadorian castaways have now spent a full month on Coco Island, after their boat reached Costa Rican soil on April, 12th. Victor Bravo, Leonardo Arcentales and Leodan Domínguez left Puerto Jaramillo in Ecuador, to go fishing on March, 11th. They spent several days adrift after claiming to have been assaulted by criminals on the high seas. They managed to reach Coco Island thanks to the help of a tuna fishing ship, whose crew members gave them fuel, food and provisions.

However, according to Fernando Quirós, regional director of Área de Conservación Marina Isla del Coco, to date no solution has been reached to repatriate them, despite coordination between immigration authorities from both Ecuador and Costa Rica, and some tourism services providers.
