Elder abandonment on the rise in Costa Rica

Carlos Luis Ocampo, age 76 occupies bed number 68 at the Hospital Nacional de Geriatría at a cost of ¢390,000 per day ($791) to the state. Ocampo was abandoned by his eight children, and after he was able to walk without assistance a truck driver brought him to the hospital.

According to Fernando Morales, director of the geriatrics hospital 6,000 elderly in 2013 were victims of abuse.
