Executive Decree would expedite the transfer of towers in Irazú

An Executive Decree was issued hoping to accelerate the procedures for the transfer of the telecommunications towers located in an area at risk of sliding in Irazú Volcano.

In January, a report from the National Emergency Commission (CNE) warned that the cracks started to measure four meters. One of the factors that helped this acceleration was the 5.5-degree tremor that shook Capellades de Alvarado in Cartago

Some 75 telecommunications towers are in check, since more than 90% of that equipment is in risk areas. Some of them must be transferred within a maximum period of 1 year.

Edwin Estrada, deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Telecommunications (MICITT), explained that they already formally informed the operators about the situation and they will meet on February 14th to address the proposals and possible solutions to the problem.

The Telecommunications Infrastructure Commission will accompany the institutions related to the topic.

For us there are three very important things: first, no interruptions of the telecommunications service; second, protecting the physical integrity of people who have access to the towers where they are located right now; and third, recognizing the importance and the positive impact of the operators. It is important to safeguard their investments,”

explained Estrada.

The Deputy Minister added that they must act “reasonably”.
