Exporters are studying economic changes after Trump’s arrival

The Chamber of Exporters of Costa Rica is discussing the impact that the Presidency of Donald Trump could have on Costa Rica’s domestic economy and exports. The group of businessmen declared that they feel a lot of insecurity.

For economist Gerardo Corrales, Trump is trying to promote a new model of economic organization, based on nationalism and the protection of local jobs, but he considers that it is too early to have a correct opinion.

On the other hand, former Deputy Minister Alberto Trejos said that the country also has to take into consideration the cabinet that Trump has chosen, since most of them have tendencies against migrants and a radical stance.

At the moment, Costa Rica imports oil from the United States and exports medical devices, pineapple and banana. In addition, 40% of the tourists who visit Costa Rica are coming from the United States.
