Ferry between Costa Rica and El Salvador began operating half a year later than planned

The ferry between Puerto La Unión in El Salvador and Puerto Caldera in Costa Rica is expected to arrive for the first time on July, 28th.

Initially, it was reported that the ferry would come into operation in January this year.

The shipping “Bajamar”, responsible for putting the ferry into operation, will start the first tests in the Salvadoran port on July, 17th, but the first trip between the countries will take place up to a week and a half later.

The vessel to be used will take approximately 20 hours to complete the route comprising

leaving La Union, crossing the Pacific, passing Nicaragua and entering the Gulf of Nicoya to arrive at Caldera”

according to Jorge Mora, director general of the Maritime Division of the MOPT.
This transportation alternative would be more economical, safe and environmentally friendly, in addition to ensure the smooth flow of loads.

The service will start with 2 trips per week and the ship would have the capacity to transport about 100 containers per trip. Those interested will have to pay the cost ranging from $700 to $900 per truck, saving up to 30% or more in logistics costs, according to calculations provided by the MOPT.
