Gluten free products are increasingly popular in CR

In Costa Rica more and more gluten free products are available on supermarkets’ shelves. Several restaurants have also included gluten free dishes on their menu and some national brands have launched their own line of gluten free products.

This is a growing market, and although there are no figures on the total number of celiac patients in the country, experts say that 1% of the world population is gluten intolerant. This protein is found in wheat, barley, oats and rye.

The demand for gluten-free products in Costa Rica has had a remarkable evolution since 2013, according to data provided by several supermarkets in the country.

Behavior and market interest has led entrepreneurs to turn their attention to the production of specialized options. This is the case of the Gluten Free Factory, a 100% Costa Rican brand that offers alternative flours and mixes for gluten free breads, pizzas, brownies and pancakes. They currently export their products to Nicaragua, Peru, Panama and Guatemala.

Another 100% Costa Rican company that produces gluten-free foods is Jinca Foods, which offers, flour, cereals, quinoa, beverages, seasonings, breading, oatmeal, biscuits and breads.

Restaurants have also joined the trend and now Mantras, Kracovia, Neshuma, Mandalla, Limoncello, Ravi, Tin Jo, Tierra Café and The Waffle Place are some of the restaurants with several gluten free options.
