Government and airline agree to promote country in Italian market

On Monday, President Luis Guillermo Solís and Tourism Minister Mauricio Ventura signed an agreement between the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) and the Spanish airline Iberia, in order to promote Costa Rica in the Italian market.

The company Iberia will use two direct flights: Milan-Madrid and Rome-Madrid to connect both cities and their travelers with San José.

Iberia offered to improve the connections of the flights from Rome and Milan with the Madrid-San José, so that the transit of these travelers by the Terminal 4 of the Airport Adolfo Suárez Barajas is more agile.

In addition, it will optimize flight schedules from Rome and Milan that connect with Madrid-San José, so that the connection period is shorter (between 80-90 minutes in each direction) and to make the travel more comfortable for tourists from these destinations.

In 2016, Costa Rica received 24,173 Italians, 7.7% more than in 2015.

Neil Chernoff, director of Network Development and Alliances of Iberia, emphasized the relationship that has existed for more than a decade between ICT and Iberia.

Costa Rica is a very important market and we have contributed very significantly to its development as a tourist destination in Europe since the start of direct flights in 2004,”

said Chernoff.

For both operations from Italy to Madrid, the airline Iberia will use Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, which have capacity for 171 and 200 passengers, respectively, and a double cabin: Business and Tourist.
