Government: App is not part of agreement with taxi drivers

The Government did not offer any offices for taxi drivers to create an app that allows them to compete with Uber. The issue is not part of the agreements either.

This was confirmed on Tuesday by the Minister of Communication, Juan Carlos Mendoza, when he denied the statements by Gilberth Ureña, spokesman for the National Forum of Taxi Drivers, who said that this had been one of the agreements of July 4th, when the union and the government sat down to negotiate after two days of protests and blockades.

The communication hierarch confirmed that the subject was discussed in the meeting and that the Ministry of Science and Technology offered advising and consulting, but that

the creation of an app was in no way in the agreement, although it was discussed.”

The taxi drivers and the government signed a series of commitments with the aim of ending the blockades that affected the country last week. They demand the immediate departure of Uber.

On the subject, the government of Carlos Alvarado has been in favor of regulating the service so that it can operate in the country, although now the issue seems to be aimed at ensuring that it does not affect the image of the Executive.

Mendoza noted that the government has not given up on the possibility of regulating the issue. He indicated it as a necessity, but once again, he referred the matter to the Legislative Assembly.
