Government asks funds to open 2,300 law enforcement positions

President Luis Guillermo Solís is asking opposition leaders in Congress to fund 2,300 law enforcement positions. The ministers and the Congressional delegates met on Tuesday at the presidential offices.

The proposal would create 1,000 additional positions in the police (Fuerza Pública), 50 in migration police, 157 in national park police, and 1,100 in traffic police.

A government spokesman said this week that lack of traffic officers prevents forming a plan to deal with road and congestion problems.

A portion of personnel costs would be financed by a tax on anonymous corporations, which is a bill still under discussion by the Congress.

Otto Guevara, from Partido Movimiento Libertario, said that there is no possibility of creating 2,300 new positions this year. He added that the extraordinary budget includes only funds to hire new 56 employees.

While Congressman Mario Redondo, from Alianza Demócrata Cristiana, said the government should first cut spending in other areas before creating new positions.
