On Wednesday, the government guaranteed that it will meet all the requirements to join the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). This was stated by the Minister of the Presidency, Víctor Morales Mora, after opposition legislators said that the government puts Costa Rica’s accession process to that important body at risk.
One of the legislators – Ana Lucía Delgado, from the National Liberation Party (PLN) – denounced that the Executive Power has not presented the deposit insurance bill, although the deadline set by the OECD to do so will expire on October 18th. She warned that, according to the OECD alert, if the initiative is not presented on time, they will suspend the accession process.
However, Morales said that the government will comply with the presentation of the project within the established deadline.
The Executive is absolutely committed to the process of joining the OECD and we have been working intensively with the Legislative Assembly in the approval of projects. We will be presenting the deposit over the next few days, before the end of this week,”
said Morales.
The initiative consists of guarantees for all savers in the event of a possible financial run. So far, Congress has approved 13 projects necessary for the incorporation of Costa Rica into the OECD.
