Government signs electric transport incentive law

President Luis Guillermo Solís signed the Law of Incentives and Promotion of Electric Transport that will give benefits to users and promoters of these vehicles. This legislation establishes incentives of an economic nature, as well as access to credit to promote the use of these vehicles.

Some of the benefits of the law for users and producers of electric vehicles are the exemption of taxes according to the value of the car, exemption of spare parts, assembly equipment and production. The car property tax is also exonerated, and they will not be subject to vehicular restriction either.

We are breaking paradigms. Costa Rica occupies a high position in the world because the era of electric mobility begins today,”

said Legislator Franklin Corella, one of the promoters of this project, along with Marcela Guerrero and Silvia Sánchez.

The impulse in the use of electric technology in transport looks for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and replace vehicles that run on fossil fuels little by little.

Currently, there are already 20 electric recharging stations installed in the country and according to the Minister of Environment and Energy, Edgar Gutiérrez, in 2018 41 more will be installed to allow Costa Ricans to have the peace of mind of having recharge spaces for these vehicles.

ICE, the National Company of Power and Light and the Company of Public Services of Heredia are in charge of placing and managing the recharging stations, as well as the Rural Electrification Cooperative, which has already placed four stations in San Ramón, San Carlos, Guanacaste and Los Santos. This year they will place 10 more stations.
