High seismic alert for possible new eruption of Turrialba

High seismic activity in the internal part of volcano Turrialba leads volcanologists to believe that a new ash eruption might occur.

The tremors are related to a high circulation of fluids inside the volcano, reported the Red Sismológica Nacional (RSN) and the Observatorio Vulcanológico and Seismological of Costa Rica (Oviscori).

Turrialba has made several ashes emissions this Tuesday, which were qualified as small and were accompanied by a vigorous expelling of gases and water vapor.

In each occasion, the fume reached 500 meters high.

The ash was dragged by the wind towards the National Park Braulio Carrillo, as well localities from La Silvia and Picada that are inside the perimeter of two kilometers around the crater, an area deemed of high risk.

“We are on alert. I repeat, there is an important seismic condition, we have to watch, keep being alert to any eventuality that might happen”, said Mauricio Mora Fernández, volcanologist of RSN.
