Homicides for organized crime hit Costa Rica

A research into homicides in Costa Rica revealed that organized crime is the main factor that intensifies the violent reality in the country.

On Wednesday, The Interinstitutional Technical Commission on Statistics of Coexistence and Citizen Security (Comesco) presented the Analysis of Felony Homicides Linked to Organized Crime during the period 2010-2016.

The report reveals that the main victims are people between 15 and 29 years old and other data. Subsequently, the second most affected group are adults between 30 and 44 years old.

They are the productive population of the country who want to get easy money and end up being part of organized crime,”

said Olger Bogantes Director of the Costa Rican Institute on Drugs (ICD).

Víctor Barrantes, vice minister of peace, said that measuring indicators of homicide is extremely important in order to study the strategies that have been designed to combat organized crime. For example, he highlighted the work of civic centers in the country.

Alice Shackelford, representative of the United Nations Program (UNDP), stressed that inequality has increased in the country and this is a high-risk aspect to prevent crime.

According to Shackelford there is still a void in certain areas regarding educational and work opportunities that must be met in the country.
