Hydroelectric project begins construction in Cocos Island

The construction of micro hydropower plant will strengthen efforts to protect and conserve the Cocos Island National Park (FILE.)


Workers from the national power company (CNFL) will begin this week the construction of a hydroelectric plant on Cocos Island. The small scale project on Chatham Bay will provide electricity to researchers, employees and and those visiting the national park while replacing existing systems that burn fossil fuel. The project is supported by the Friends of Cocos Island, Embassy of Japan, and the SC Johnson corporation.
