According to the information provided by the Technical Secretariat of Mental Health, from the Ministry of Health, 1408 people tried to commit suicide during 2015. The organization wants to present a national attention’s strategy in October.

80% of people who attempted against their lives were young women. The specialist says that these people are asking for help and they think of violence as an option.

There is a steady increase in the suicide attempts, but now we have the ability to diagnose them in time and help them,

said Allan Rímola, director of the Department of Mental Health.

The data show that in 2013, the first report was of 888 suicide attempts, while in 2014 the number rose up to 1248.
By 2015 the number of suicide attempts reached 1408 people, of which 296 cases were processed through the 911 and the Patronato Nacional de Infancia (PANI).

On average, in Costa Rica a suicide takes place every day, so health authorities have implemented ten projects at regional and local levels for its prevention and in October they expect to present the strategy at national level to approach people with suicidal behavior in the country.
