INCOFER could offer an electronic payment system by the end of 2017

The electronic fare is considered essential to update the public transport services, because transfers can be done and even different transports such as buses and trains can join the initiative.

For this reason the Instituto Costarricense de Ferrocarriles (INCOFER) is studying the possibility of implementing an electronic payment system.

Maybe our trains and stations are not suited for that, but we are studying the possibilities of an electronic payment system in the near future. In the coming months we intend to have new trains, then perhaps we could work on the electronic payment system, which should be ready by the end of 2017. Some stations require improvements in order to provide a better service and to be upgraded for the new system,

declared Christian Vargas, INCOFER’s CEO.

When asked whether the electronic collection would influence the ticket’s price or not, Vargas answered that it is not necessarily like that, but the matter would be studied when the approval of tariffs is required by ARESEP and they have to analize if this system will collect a better income by preventing the payment evasion.
