Industrial sector opposes the young employment project

The Chamber of Industry of Costa Rica showed its opposition to the bill “Encouraging Youth Employment” presented in the Legislative Assembly by Silvia Sánchez, from National Liberation, aiming at getting 25% of people among the 17 and 25 years old in companies’ payrolls.

The industrial sector, through the president of the chamber, Enrique Egloff, was against this initiative, because that would not help the companies at all, nor would it reduce the level of unemployment in Costa Rica.

In addition to the obligation to hire young people between 17 and 24 years old, the law would force companies to give them one free hour per day for training, which the ICRC does not agree with either.

Unemployment is solved with more competitiveness for more production and growth of companies. By establishing age percentages in the form and granting the daily allowance time to study, the problem of youth unemployment is not solved,”

added Egloff.

The ICRC sent this opinion to the Special Permanent Commission on Youth, Children and Adolescents of the Legislative Assembly, before the chamber’s inquiry.

For the industrial sector, the project that should be discussed is the Dual Education, which allows students to have experience and training in companies while still studying at school, which allows them, in addition to training, to be known in the labor market.

The problem of employment for young people is not resolved by forcing companies to a certain percentage. The real solution lies in the approval of the Dual Education Law Project proposed by the productive sector for several years. The main problem we have is that we are not even discussing dual education in the country,”
