Inflation barely reaches 0.37% this year

According to official statistical reports, Costa Rica saw a negative variation of -0.12% in its consumer price index (CPI), and the index accumulated in the last 12 months remained below the 3% inflation projected for this year.

The National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) reported the inflation in the last 12 months reached 0.55%, while the accumulated in the first 10 months of 2016 was 0.37%.

The reduction in October’s CPI was due to sharp declines in prices of:
-rent and housing services (-0.67%)
-food and non-alcoholic beverages (-0.32%)
-entertainment and culture (-0.15%).

On the contrary, there was an increase in the prices of:
-health groups (0.19%)
-meals outside the home and accommodation services (0.13%)
-goods and services (0.07%)

September’s CPI was even lower than October’s, with -0.47%.

In 2015, the price index had a negative accumulation of -0.81%.
