Inmates and university students come together to create lovely mural

Under the slogan “When we meet, we grow stronger”, a group of inmates, residents of the community of Granadilla de Curridabat and students of the University of Costa Rica (UCR), collectively created a mural.

The project called “Urban Canvases” sought to rescue art as a fundamental and revolutionary element that allows transformation, change and integration.

Melania Rodríguez, participant of the IE-82, said that

jail is not only a matter of those inside and their families, but of the whole society.”

Daniel, a young resident of the Ofelia Vicenzi Center, said the experience was very useful because it gave him the opportunity to learn new things and share with other people.

In the process, young people between the ages of 18 and 24 participated in the Ofelia Vicencio Specialized Center and are part of the Juvenile Penal Program.

In addition to the community of Granadilla, the participation of the Casa del Pueblo of the Municipality of Curridabat and the support of the Ministry of Justice and Peace was also included.

Urban Canvases is one of the Student Initiatives of the Vice-rectory of Social Action of the UCR, whose social action projects are developed by high school and undergraduate students of different majors.

It also aims to create processes of reflection and learning with young inmates on issues of promotion, social reintegration and awareness.
