International Youth Day

On August 12th International Youth Day is celebrated in order to highlight the contribution and participation of this part of the population in developing countries.

It is also a great opportunity to remember some facts that you may not know about Costa Rican youth.

-In Costa Rica 11% of young people have tried to commit suicide. Out of this group only 1.3% looked for professional help.
-Not even half (45%) of Costa Rican young people use condoms when having sex and those who use them, only do so to prevent pregnancy.
-In the country, 50% of women aged 25 years old and 35 years old are housewives.
-69 out of 100 Costan Rican young people do not trust governments.
-In Costa Rica 34 teen births are recorded every day.
-42% of men and 21% of women in Costa Rica consume alcohol. Only 15% of them smoke tobacco and 4% smoke marijuana.
-According to a new study published in Archives of Sexual Behavior, about 15% of young people worldwide aged 20 years old to 24 years old say no to sexual partners since they turned 18 years old.
-33% of young people aged 16 years old to 21 years old who are sexually active have experienced at least one “worrying” sexual problem. In men the most common issue is to be precocious and women is the orgasmic disfunction.
-Cybersex is becoming popular. 34% of young people around the world have had sex through screens.
-According to UNICEF, 1 million young people live on less than 1 dollar a day and 27.2 million young people live on less than 2 dollars.
