One of the visitor’s favorite postcards from Irazú Volcano is back.

Yes, we are talking about the famous green lake that forms inside the active crater, which has reappeared at the end of the rainy season.

Recent photographs provided to CRHoy.com by tourists who visited the national park show the beautiful waters.

The lake located in the crater is very striking because of its greenish color due to the existing minerals in the site. However, in previous months it was practically dry.

Another lagoon reappeared in Diego de La Haya crater. Even several birds have been seen on the site.

Volcanologist Javier Pacheco, from the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) explained in November last year that the lagoons form due to the waterproofing effect of the ash.

Near the top there is a lot of old volcanic material that has been transformed by the fumaroles. The soil acquires a clayey and impermeable texture and that makes that any place that does not have a drainage, accumulates water,”

indicated the volcanologist.

According to scientists and locals, the main crater lagoon had dried up several years ago.
