Irregular immigration and slums stir conflict according to vice minister

Pital neighbors were visited by the authorities between discomfort and concerns. CRH.

Irregular immigration and the formation of squatter homes in Guácimo and Pital de San Carlos have been identified by the Ministry of Security as the main factors that fuel the wave of violence in these communities.

According to Walter Navarro, Deputy Security Minister, “Such settlements do not create a new culture, or provide a new way for a person to become established in the community. Many of them arrive to confront the community that rejects them.” His comments are directed toward illegal immigrants who build homes illegally on marginal land.

According to statistics provided by the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ), so far this year there have been 26 complaints of theft, 19 assaults and one homicide in in San Carlos Pital. Area residents complain of being afraid to leave their homes. In response, security forces intend to increase police presence, install a Police Support Center (CAP) and step up immigration patrols.
