Isla del Coco has a state-of-art radar

Isla del Coco has a radar that will protect its natural and marine wealth. It was an investment of 3.4 million dollars.

The radar is already installed. It allows to strengthen controls on illegal fishing, drug trafficking and human trafficking.

This is definitely a historic milestone. It is to have the real capacity to protect the heritage of all Costa Ricans,

expressed Edgar Gutiérrez, Minister of Environment and Energy.

In bad weather conditions, the radar is able to detect vessels that are 48 nautical miles away. In addition, a detector that allows to know the name, type, flag and draft of the ship was also installed.

This was a 4-year project and it was developed thanks to the work of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the Ministry of Security, the MOPT, ICE, Compañía Nacional de Fuerza y Luz, Costa Rica por Siempre Association and Conservación Internacional.
