In November, Hurricane Otto caused the formation of a lagoon in the community of Abrojo, Ciudad Neily, in the south of the country.

It posses a risk of possible landslide due to the pressure of the water, which risks some adjacent houses.

Representatives of the National Emergency Commission (CNE) and the Municipality of Corredores met to define the measures that would be taken to reduce the risk to the residents.

However, Carlos Viales, mayor of Corredores, said that so far they have worked on palliative measures and not on the intervention of the lagoon. He also notes that the summer season was not used to dredge and reduce the flow.

It’s a subject that I’m very worried about. We have been pressing the Emergency Commission. The summer was very short because in January it was still raining and in mid-March the rains started again (…) I went to the CNE with the intention of expressing my concern as time goes by and we have not seen any reaction regarding the most important issue, which was the lagoon,”

said the mayor.

At the moment the work has focused on mitigating the danger, with the installation of radio bases to communicate and monitor the behavior of the lagoon. They also met with the community to develop the evacuation plan in the event of an emergency.
