Legislative Assembly rejects U.S. military threat to Venezuela

The Costa Rican Legislature rejected the threat made by US President Donald Trump to consider a military option in Venezuela.

A total of 32 legislators approved a motion in that direction, promoted by legislator Ottón Solís, from the Citizen Action Party (PAC).

The initiative was voted against by legislators Marco Vinicio Redondo, from PAC, Mario Redondo, from the Christian Democratic Alliance (ADC), Natalia Díaz, from the Liberation Movement, Luis Vásquez, from PUSC, Gonzalo Ramírez, from Renovación Costa Rica, and Ligia Fallas from Frente Amplio.

The proposal indicates

the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica regards with concern any threat addressed to and from any sovereign State, and under no circumstances may it condone a military intervention by a foreign power in Venezuela.”

The motion also ratifies that Costa Rica is entitled to advocate for international law as the only tool to resolve disputes and appeal to the rule of law so that Venezuelans find their own path to social peace and human development.

It also calls on President Luis Guillermo Solís to request the application of the Democratic Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS) and to express with all clarity Costa Rica’s vehement rejection to any threat of military aggression by the United States against Venezuela.

The motion will be communicated to the president, the embassies of the United States and Venezuela, the General Secretariat of the OAS and the General Secretariat of the United Nations.
