Legislators approve law against nepotism in Congress

On Monday, the Legislative Plenary approved in the first reading the bill that aims to prohibit the appointment of relatives of legislators in Congress. The initiative, promoted by Congressman Gerardo Vargas Varela, from Frente Amplio, was voted unanimously with the support of 42 legislators.

The bill reforms article 49 of the Law of Personnel of the Legislative Assembly, in order to prohibit lawmakers from hiring people who are related by blood or affinity kinship in a direct or collateral line up even to the second degree.

The proposal, according to the text, will govern as of the date of its publication in the official gazette.

The project was sent for consultation to the Comptroller General of the Republic (CGR), Attorney General of the Republic (PGR), General Directorate of Civil Service, Ministries of Labor and Finance, Legislative Assembly and political parties with representation in Congress.
