Legislators prepare project for same-sex unions

Legislators from different parliamentary groups prepare a bill to regulate civil unions between people of the same sex and try to curb the entry into force of equal marriage by May 2020.

The congressmen would try to adapt the legislation to the sentence of the Constitutional Chamber that gave 18 months, in November last year, to allow for equal marriage, after declaring unconstitutional the rules that prevent it.

The project – which introduces changes to the previous text – would be presented under the new rules of the Legislative Assembly Regulation, with the intention of making it move faster.

The initiative is promoted by the Christian Social Unity Party (PUSC) and the independent New Republic block. But the idea is to add other groups, which would be interested in supporting it.

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights decided in January 2018 to request Costa Rica to recognize same-sex marriage.
