Legislators welcome changes to project against tax fraud

The majority of members of the Committee on Financial Affairs welcomed a new text for the bill to fight tax fraud.

Legislators from the National Liberation Party (PLN), Social Christian Unity Party (PUSC) and the Libertarian Movement (ML) supported the new version.

But it was not supported by legislators from the Citizen Action Party (PAC) and Frente Amplio (FA).

This was the approval of the replacement text, not the final decision on the project, which could be voted on Wednesday.

The text amends the proposal of a centralized register of shareholders and beneficial owners of corporations, and limits the powers of the Ministry of Finance to retain liens of companies suspected of tax fraud.

It also eliminates the possibility of administrative embargoes and establishes an obligation involving a judge to proceed, who would have up to 5 days to resolve.

It also has no penalties for tax advisors who sign sworn statements from taxpayers with inaccurate information.

The project against tax fraud sent by the executive branch to the Congress, which is exempt from formalities, should be voted before August 27th.
