Legislators will present a project for heterosexual-only marriage

A group of legislators pledged to work on the proposal by the Citizen Proposal Management to make a constitutional amendment to Article 52 so that marriage is only between a man and a woman.

With the reform it would read as follows:

Marriage is the union of a man and a woman, it rests on the equal rights of the spouses, and is the essential basis of the family.”

The proposal was promoted by Alexandra Loría, former legislator of National Restoration who indicated that, since 2013, she collected 150 thousand signatures of people who support this position. In as much, she presented the project by means of this legislative route, but she will only be able to present it during the period of ordinary sessions because it’s a reform of the Political Constitution.

The Constitutional Chamber issued said article 6 of the Family Code that banned same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. Therefore, it gave the legislators a term of 18 months to legislate about this matter. If not, it will run automatically from May 26th, 2020.

Consulted on the matter, Loría indicated that in that vote, the magistrates did not touch on subjects related to the Political Constitution, only to the Family Code. Therefore, this proposal is valid, in as much as the Constitution is above that decision of the Chamber.

Loría also said that children can only come from the union between a man and a woman.

The initiative was welcomed by the block of independent legislators and Erick Rodriguez, Social Christian Shirley Díaz, as well as Otto Roberto Vargas from the Republican Social Christian Party (PRSC), and Patricia Villegas from the National Integration Party (PIN).
