Legislature approves Paris Agreement

On Monday, the Legislative Assembly approved the Paris Agreement in the first reading. Thi is a global initiative against climate change.

41 lawmakers voted in favor and 1 against (Ligia Fallas, from Frente Amplio).

The agreement was signed in December last year by 195 countries in the French capital. Each nation committed to take actions to fight climate change.

The agreement is an instrument of the Framework Convention of the United Nations on Climate Change, which seeks to promote measures and investments to reduce carbon emissions.

One of the goals of the initiative is that all countries must reach a greenhouse gas emission cap as soon as possible, so that the average temperature increase at the end of the century is between 1.5 and 2 degrees Celsius.

So far, 186 of the 195 countries negotiating have already submitted their plans for reducing emissions.

Under the agreement, countries with fewer resources receive international assistance to enable them to reduce their emissions.

The agreement was forwarded to consultation in the Constitutional Court.

The proposal, which is binding on each State, will take effect when ratified by at least 55 States.
