Magaly cinema to operate with solar energy from November

Cine Magaly announced that it will operate with solar energy from November. With this, Costa Rica becomes the third country in Latin America to have clean energies in movie theaters.

After the installation of solar panels, Cine Magaly will not use electrical energy in its entirety. The investment of the project is around $70 thousand.

The initiative consists of 180 solar panels of 320 watts each, and has the capacity to produce 90,000 kWh (kilowatts) per year. This would be enough to cover the electricity consumption of 25 houses per month.

Citizens are more aware of what climate change means; and our new responsibilities as a company. We are establishing a new standard in terms of what the most conscious and demanding public can expect from a movie theater like this, which marks precedents in Latin America,”

commented Luis Carcheri, General Manager of Distribuidora Romaly.

Costa Rica joins Brazil and Argentina, countries that already use these systems in their cinemas. According to Carcheri, a roof area of 340 m2 will be used for the installation of solar panels.

The solar panels are made up of a group of cells that produce electricity from the light that hits them,”

explained William Campos of the Energy Solutions Department of Panasonic.
