Marviva Foundation, with the support of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, as well as several municipalities in the area, placed refill stations on the path of the pilgrimage where the faithful can fill their bottles with water and not throw them away.
The idea of the campaign is that walkers reuse a single container all the way and do not buy bottles on the way.
The first station is located in the Service Center el Higuerón and the second 300 meters east of the Servicentro la Galera, old road to Tres Ríos.
Last year, the little more than 21 kilometers of route of the Pilgrimage left 20 tons of garbage.
Part of what was collected through Eco Romería on the way was: 570 kilos of plastic, 24 kilos of aluminum and 32 of tetra pack.
The financial cost of the environmental damage that this type of plastic waste will cause in the marine ecosystems worldwide will amount to $13 billion a year. MarViva has insisted that it is urgent to regulate the production and marketing of plastic.
