MEP awaits results on rape case

Four months after the alleged sexual abuse of a 15-year-old girl by one of her teachers at the Technical College José Figueres Ferrer, in Desamparados, the Ministry of Public Education (MEP) is awaiting the results of the investigation from the Court.

As reported in the Department of Disciplinary Management Ministry, the teacher is kept under precautionary measures outside the institution, relocated to an administrative position.

On February, 19th, security forces arrested a teacher named Leal as a suspect of raping the girl, who was found in a bathroom of the institution bleeding in her private parts.

The educator, who had been working in the school for 3 years, had previously been suspended for a similar case that occurred in another school. The Minister of Education, Sonia Marta Mora, said the investigation would take between 4 and 6 months.

MEP data indicate that 24 cases of sexual abuse allegations against officials were registered in 2015. Eight of these cases resulted in the accused being fired, 2 were acquitted because it was determined there was no abuse, and 14 were closed either because the victim gave up or because it didn’t involve an active ministry official and there was no administrative punishment.
