MEP brings school drop-outs back with calls and visits

With calls, messages and visits to homes, the Ministry of Public Education (MEP) seeks to outsmart the school drop rates after the midyear break. This indicator showed an increase in 2015, when 3,000 students left the classroom, compared to the same period of 2014.

María Alexandra Ulate, coordinator of the corporate strategy “Yo me apunto” (I’m in), said this year they are working harder, with constant communication with the 27 regional directorates, which are closer to students and are able to identify vulnerable students before they leave the system.

Officials began the process of enrollment verification on Monday.

The midyear school break represents a crucial period for the MEP, as it tends to contribute to the “escape” of a large number of students, especially those going from 7° to 8°, and from 9 °to 10°, peak periods for school desertion, due to socioeconomic and family issues and discouragement.

Sonia Marta Mora, Minister of Education explained that it would be years before they see the results of the institutional strategy against desertion.
