Mexican gang leader returned a month after assaults to take loot

She came to plan the assaults, left a few days before and returned almost a month later to coordinate the extraction of at least 300 watches stolen in two robberies in Escazú.

That is the role played by a woman named Montes Ibarra (33), one of the main leaders of an organized gang of Mexicans that commits robberies and assaults on a global scale.

Montes Ibarra, one of the three people arrested on Wednesday at the Juan Santamaría International Airport, arrived in the country for the first time on October 23rd from the Dominican Republic, about nine days before the robberies were committed.

On October 30th, a day before the events, Montes and Alvarado left the country for Mexico. On October 31st, at around 3:30 p.m., the assaults were perpetrated simultaneously at the Eurochronos jewelry store (Multiplaza de Escazú) and Tiempo Global (Plaza Colonial). It is believed that the booty exceeded $ 600 thousand with 300 watches and jewelry.

The robberies involved 28 people, who had bought a bus and a car to travel on the day of the crime.

Surprisingly, Montes Ibarra returned to the country on December 4th from Mexico to coordinate the transportation of an important part of the booty to Mexico. She, along with two other Mexicans, had the mission to move 12 watches each and leave Costa Rican territory on Wednesday. However, the judicial investigation caught them.

On Thursday, another Mexican surnamed Mondragón Martiarena was captured in the vicinity of a hotel in La Uruca. He had a suitcase ready, several goods and about 83 watches.

Walter Espinoza, director of the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ), confirmed that the seized watches match with the ones stolen from the jewelries.

It is believed that the organization committed similar acts in Mexico, the United States and Canada. Its main leader would be based in Mexico City.
