Mexican President: Evo Morales was a “victim of a coup d’etat”

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said on Sunday that Evo Morales, was a “victim of a coup d’etat” before resigning from the presidency of Bolivia under military pressure and asking for asylum in this country.

This is the first time that the Mexican leftist president makes direct remarks on the circumstances that led to Morales’s departure from power in Bolivia.

Evo was the victim of a coup! And from Mexico to the world we repeat: yes to democracy yes, no to militarism!”

said López Obrador said during a rally before tens of thousands of his followers in the Zocalo (central square) of Mexico City.

The president took stock of his first year of government and, briefly referring to the foreign policy of Mexico, recalled the decision of his government to receive Morales, who arrived on November 12th accompanied by his vice president Álvaro García.

Upon his arrival in Mexico, Morales was received by Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, but so far he has not met, at least publicly, with López Obrador.

Morales resigned from the presidency of Bolivia on November 10th, after three weeks of protests that arose after elections in which the opposition accused him of claiming a fourth consecutive term through fraud.
