American Expatriate Costa Rica

Millionaire tax evader hid in Costa Rica, but everything went wrong

An American who fled to Costa Rica after being found guilty of tax evasion offenses was sentenced to seven years in prison on Friday.

The man, identified as Timothy Stubbs, was sentenced in September 2015. However, two weeks before the final judgment against him, in December of that year, he fled to Costa Rica.

To achieve his purpose, he disconnected the electronic ankle monitor that controlled his movements and fled to Costa Rica, where he previously lived in 2014 and enjoyed temporary residence.

Stubbs, 52, was convicted of evading taxes for the amount of $2 million.

The man owned an investment fund that operated in the state of Colorado and also had another company that offered rebates for investing in home improvement products.

Between 2005 and 2007, he earned more than $7 million in profits, yet he did not file corporate tax returns and only returned $700,000 to his investors.

In addition, since 1992 he did not cancel personal taxes and since 1993 he did not pay individual taxes on income. That is, his crimes go back two decades.

Apparently, in order to hide his income, he devised a fraud scheme using other bank accounts and acquiring gold and silver. Besides, he lived a life full of luxuries and eccentricities.

In Costa Rica, the subject acknowledged having goods valued at more than half a million dollars.

Evidence showed Stubbs purchased real estate in Grand Junction and Crested Butte, Colorado, and two condos in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, which cost more than $2.9 million in the years he committed the crimes…”

said the EE Justice Department.

According to the investigation, the subject deceived Costa Rican migrant officials with the intention of prolonging his residence and trying to remain in Costa Rica to circumvent American justice.

In April 2017, the American was arrested in Nuevo Arenal -Guanacaste- and deported to the United States to face pending charges.

Aside from seven years in prison, Colorado’s judges ordered Stubbs to serve three years of parole and pay more than $600,000 in fines.
